How BMI is calculated
BMI is calculated using the formula: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²). For example, if you weigh 75 kg and are 1.75 m tall, your BMI would be 24.5. This places you in the 'Normal weight' category according to standard BMI classifications.
BMI categories
| BMI Range | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Normal weight |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 and above | Obesity |
What BMI does not tell you
- BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass.
- Athletes may have a high BMI due to muscle without having excess body fat.
- It does not account for fat distribution, which also affects health risks.
